I came up with the JBird Fitness tagline “Fly On A Fitness High” because movement and exercise have always fueled me with an inexplicable rush of goodness, which I’ve shared with you before and have absolutely no intentions of ever stopping.
But I too am always looking for the thing that is going to drive me & get me excited to wake up in the morning.
And although fitness has always played a huge part in the “it’ factor for me. The movement I have focused on has shifted and changed throughout the years.
I’ve mentioned, when I started teaching, Step was the rage & I was an addict. But I don’t think I have ever told you that before I got into group fitness, power walking was my jam.
No joke!
I’m pretty sure I was the youngest power walker in the neighborhood, while I’d see my mom & her friends suited up, sweatbands & all.
But that didn’t stop me.
Of course I couldn’t do it without music, so I would pop my cassette tape into my Walkman and venture off in my spankin' white Reeboks.
When I first started I could only do a mile or 2. But before I knew it I was walking all the way to the south end of town & back. Which I just google mapped and proud to say, it was 8 miles round trip LOL
I remember how good it felt after each walk and how I couldn’t wait to see how much further I could go the next time.
I didn’t have a fitness tracker back then, but I didn’t need one. Yes, I took note of my pace, route & time, but I would never had gone back out there if it didn’t make me happy.
So…
What Are You Going To Change About Your Fitness Program This Year?
To make sure you stick to the plan…My best advise is to choose something you enjoy.
It’s got to be more than a workout!
It’s a phrase I have repeated time & time again to members and students, whenever I am asked “What kind of workout should I be doing?”
More Than A Workout is #1 on the priority list.
It’s when you put aside all of the calorie counting, self-judgement, fitness tracking and whatever other external factors may sway your experience and you just discover the pure joy in moving your body.
And when you find movement that makes you happy, exercising becomes waaaayy more than something on your to-do list. It transitions very quickly to a “I’ve got to do it”, “I don’t want to miss it”, “I WILL NOT miss it…because I really have fun working out!”
So, my wish for you in 2020 is to discover workouts you look forward to and want to go back to the very next day. Exercise that gets you moving in a positive direction. And movement you just can’t live without.
For most, this is the time of year to play. Play with different ways to move. Or like me, go back to movement which has always been FUN! and put a new twist on it.
