Give Your Body The Thanks It Deserves

This month especially, you often hear the importancy of being thankful.

Yet the past few weeks we have been focusing on getting the most out of your workouts by being efficient.

And I want to say, to me, these two qualities go hand in hand.

When you truly learn to recognize & appreciate the body you live in, you begin to hone in on what it needs & wants. And visa versa.

Don’t get me wrong…this is definitely a wonderful season to be grateful for the things & those around you. But it’s also just as important to thank yourself.

Take care of YOURSELF.
Embrace who YOU are.
Fully appreciate YOUR BODY.

The BEST way to do that is...

Make time to connect to your body thoughtfully.

Listen to it.

Allow it to guide you in moving in ways that fulfill you AND make you stronger inside & out.

The AND is capitalized for a reason.

Last week I had 3 different times where someone told me they worked out and they injured themselves.

So I asked, “What were you doing?’

I wasn’t trying to find out if it was running, boot camp, barre or weight training.

I was LISTENING for other clues in the conversation like…”I used to train like this, but now it’s not working”, or “I don’t understand. I do the same thing everyday. Why would it hurt now?” and even “It just never gets easier."

It is completely human to stay with what you know. Whether it’s doing what everyone else is doing because it’s the in thing. Or maybe you don’t know about any other options. And unfortunately my industry has brain washed you into thinking you will only see results if you nearly kill yourself exercising. But...

Most of the time, the answer for what you need is right in front of you.

If it’s not working anymore, STOP, do something different.
If you’re doing too much of one thing, STOP, do something different.
If you’re not seeing progress, STOP, do something different.
If you can't be consistent in your training, STOP, do something different.
If you’re not excited & inspired to get moving again the very next day, STOP, do something different.

Listen to your body. It’s talking to you. It’s telling you exactly what it needs. What you need & inevitably what you want.

And the best way you can thank your body, for ALL that it does, is to LISTEN.

So I'm throwing in 3 more moves (below) to our last two newsletter workouts. They will not only complete the routine, but they will also enable you to stretch and elongate your muscles to help connect your body & mind.

The beauty of dynamic stretching is you literally progress from rep to rep, see & feel immediate changes happening in your body and... it feels oh sooooo good.

Giving you an insight to how your body REALLY wants to feel in your days going forward.

Dynamic Stretch Sequence:
Slowly move into each pose 5-8 consecutive times and with each passing rep, hold for 2 second. (click on the pic below to view a video demo)

Movement Tips: Keep your breathing even & continuous. Start off simply by getting your body into the position, hold for a count of 1.2., then slowly move back to a neutral stance. With each following repetition, thoughtfully go deeper.

Mindset Cues: Get it out of your head that "I'm not flexible". That will only hinder you, not empower you. Trust me when I say, even the slightest of change in depth can have a positive impact.

The Key To Staying Healthy Over The Holidays

Continuing with our "Be Efficient" theme in this week’s newsletter.

Gosh that sounds so boring….blah

So, LET'S SHAKE IT UP! Because you know I ❤️  fitness and I’m also a strong believer in it should NEVER be boring or a chore.

Movement should make you feel ALIVE!

So even when we start talking form & precision to get the most out of your workout, I also want you to infuse energy into every move you make.

Think…

Engaged. Focus. Exciting!

Ok, with those thoughts in mind, I am giving you three more moves to add onto last week’s mini-workout routine. If you missed that newsletter click HERE to catch up. Otherwise, let’s check out The Lunge, The Attitude Lift & The Spidey Plank.
 

Stationary Lunge

The Lunge


Mindset Tip: This version stays stationary until you change sides, so “Own Your Space”

Movement Cues:

  • Step your right leg back, balancing on the ball of the foot with heel raised, toes forward & posture tall.

  • Lower the back knee down to hover over the floor.

  • In this bottom position, create two 90 degree angles with your legs, keeping your forward knee behind your toes.

  • Return to your start position.

  • Repeat 15-20x and switch sides.

 

The Attitude Lift


Mindset Tip: It’s called an Attitude, so bring the energetic drama, have FUN, be playful.

Attitude Leg Dancer's Conditioning

Movement Cues:

  • Stand tall in 1st Position, meaning heels together & your toes turned out in a narrow ‘V”, with your arms extended out to the sides.

  • Keep your turn out in tact & point your right toes on the floor in front of you. Shine your inner thigh upward with your knee slightly bent.

  • Lift & lower the leg, with hips level and posture upright for 15-20 reps.

  • Then switch sides and repeat.

 

The Spidey Plank


Mindset Tip: Originally named after Spiderman, but changing it to Spidey to make it gender neutral 😝 Either way, think super hero. Strong. Determined. Unstoppable.

The Spiderman Plank

Movement Cues:

  • Start in plank position with your hands underneath the shoulders, core engaged, legs fired up and energy reaching out through the crown of the head, as well as out through your heels.

  • Bring one knee toward your outer arm and then return to start.

  • Alternate legs, switching from side to side for 16-20 reps.

 

These three exercises make a GREAT quick workout or you can combine them with the moves from last week for a longer routine.

Either way, keep moving your body during these next 2 months MINDFULLY.

It will make your season shine bright & keep your body healthy & strong!

An Early Halloween Scare...

My world this past week got rocked…

I had all sorts of plans to jump start getting the word out about JBird classes, re-work the website, and even have a little fun creating new choreography. But unfortunately that didn’t happen.

Mommy duty took over. And rightfully so.

Sierra was having a grand ole time at an ice skating party last Sunday, but then slipped & hit her head. She’s ok. It’s mild, the doc says. But it is a concussion.

When I heard those words nothing else mattered. I needed to shift gears, whip out the mommy powers and take care of my baby. I don’t care that she’s eight years old. She’ll always be my baby.

Now, I’m not telling you all of this to make you sad or to worry you in any way.

But I would like to see more moms out there bringing those helmets to the rink, especially with the winter season coming our way.

It turns out 3-4 of the other moms, who had experience ice skating with their family, had a helmet ready to go. And when I arrived I said “I didn’t even think to bring one.” So, let’s get the word out there & keep those little ones smiling 😁

P.S. Luckily Sierra was feeling better by Halloween night and we were able to sneak in a little Trick or Treating. She was so excited to wear her spy costume. As for Nora, she wanted to go as a Butterfly Fairy for the 2nd year in a row. And I had another excuse to wear my new Athleta leopard tights!

Beside a mommy lesson, I was also reminded this week about:

  1. Setting Priorities - for me and most, family comes first. So fitness took a back seat this past week. But by week’s end, with Sierra home & by my side, I said “I gotta move”. So I hopped on JBirdFitness.com and did the Kick It! Collection. And damn did it feel GOOOOOD! Plus, Sierra got to see me taking care of myself and even commented on how strong I was. They are always watching and I'm happy to show her taking care of your body is a lifetime commitment.

  2. Being Flexible - My old self would have been stressed out that I couldn’t get it ALL done. And you know what? She’s right. But I’ve learned to let go, which helps diminish the stress of it all and gives me "permission" to go with the flow. How? Yoga. It has really taught me how to be in the moment and so much more. And that pun wasn’t intended. But...It does help tremendously with your flexibility too.

  3. Getting Back On Track - I am going to fully admit, there were a few nights last week when I got to the end of the day and instead of going to sleep early, I binged watched the Voice from DVR and dove in early to the Halloween candy. Don’t judge. We all deal with things differently LOL. But the lesson here was…It didn’t make me feel better and if I’m being honest, it made me feel worse after the 1st day. So, I’m taking stock in that assessment and movin’ on. Not judging myself, but starting on a new track this week.

How Can We Keep Working Out Together?

With this past week being my last at the YMCA, people have been asking how can we stay in touch?...

How can we keep working out with you?

4 years ago when I left NYC, I didn’t have an answer for that. I just said “Let’s stay in touch. You never know. I may make a video some day.”

JBird wasn’t even a thing yet.

Of course, if you live in the Bucks County area I want you to come take class with me at Coalesce Dance Center (info below). But as I said last week, I know change can be a little rocky & you may have other commitments you need to ride out.

Good news! Unlike before, I have a solution.

HELLO! To A New Era...

“Parting is such sweet sorrow.”

You can say that again! And I’ve had to do it too many times in my life.

Mostly because I’ve had an itch to go places, see things and push myself in a new direction. But it never makes it easy.

This time, it’s not a complete adios. Not a see you when I see you…but knowing it’ll probably be a never again, because I’m moving across the globe, kinda good bye.

This is a…I’m staying put, planting root, and gettin’ nitty gritty digging my heels in, kinda vibe.

I’m not leaving for once. I’m saying “This is home” FINALLY!

And I can’t wait to get this venture underway, because I have a plan. Big Plans. A vision I can’t shake.

Yes, I am a Dreamer but I’m also a Do-er.

So get ready, because I’m about to unleash a whole new side of JBirdyou’ve never seen before and it’s going to be so much FUN!

Here's a glimpse into what's next...
 

If you’re not from PA, I realize this whole “sad song” business about this week being my last week of teaching at the local YMCA here in Doylestown, isn’t messing with you in the least. But we have, for sure, crossed paths at some point and you know I'm an emotional mess when it comes to this stuff. Like when I sobbed my eyes out on my last day at 50th Street NYC Equinox, after being there for over a decade.

I get attached. You change me for the better. And then when I need to move on, I feel excited for what’s next but can’t shake this linger “GOSH! I’m gonna miss you” feeling.

So give me a sec here to pull myself together. Wipe the tears. And confidently say, “This will certainly not be the last time you see me. You’re stuck with me for good”.

I realize the change will be a little rocky, but there are ways we can workout together, no matter where you are in the world. So check out the What’s Happening section below for the different ways we can sweat, work hard & play together in the days ahead.

And this time I can honestly say “See You Soon!”

Music & SWEAT!

I am all about the music.

Ryan, my hubby, walks in the door and turns on the TV. But my first reaction is to say “Alexa, play music.”

Alexa & I have a thing. She gets me. Well, let’s be honest, technology is becoming pretty awesome in figuring out what we like. And when it comes to my music selection I don’t even need to ask for specifics. She, Alexa that is, just plays it. And I often hear music I haven’t heard yet, but love.

Which is super helpful when I’m making my monthly playlists.

I often get the question “Where do you find your music?”

And I’ll tell you...

It’s a process.

Alexa helps big time, but I am armed & ready with Shazam at any given moment, as well. In the car listening to KIIS FM (an LA station available on Sirius), in Starbucks, at the mall, etc…Anywhere music is playing, that inspires me or catches my ear, I’m clicking that swirly button.

The final search happens on Spotify, because they have the goods to literally pull out a whole playlist of songs “Recommended For You”.

Being that I'm starting up my own classes here in PA, I’ve got workouts to plan, I’m still running JBirdFitness.com ...oh yeah, & I’m a mom LOL. I don’t have all day to listen and select music. But I definitely would if I could.

 

Music moves me. And I know it affects you too.

Are You Ready To Jump?

Ok, so I’ll admit I was a total 80’s Madonna groupie. My first ever album…yes album, was Madonna, Madonna (the Original).  And the first thing I would do when I got home from school was run to the record player, get the music going, quickly push all of my parent’s living room furniture out of the way and start dancing. 

 

And my mother hated it.

 

Whoa Whoa…not like that. Thank goodness. 

 

She loved seeing me so happy and dancing my heart out. But she’d always say “I don’t like the lyrics of these songs”. Then she’d yell out over the music “JOE!!!” (That’s my dad) “Do you think she should be listening to this stuff?”

 

All while I am belting out “Like A Virgin….” HaHaHaHaHa

 

The funny thing is, I didn’t even realize what I was singing. 

 

So you can see, moving has always been in my blood.

 

I hear music and I can’t help myself.

 

Then you add in my total nerdy side of loving anatomy & biomechanics and you have an overzealous fitness freak on your hands.

 

So much has changed since those days, yet so much of who I am is the same.

 

One other thing that gets me going, gets me excited and inspired to push myself is change.

 

Yes, CHANGE.

 

Like the leaves are about to change on the trees overhead here in PA, I am about to make a big change.

 

I’ve decided to take a leap of faith and jump…

 

I am leaving my position as the Barre Fusion instructor at the YMCA here in Doylestown and starting my own thing. 

 

Taking JBird Fitness in a new direction and focusing my full efforts on building a community in Bucks County, of people who want to feel great in their body and have FUN with fitness.

It’s a little scary (in the best way possible) but just like my mom used to smile, watching me dance in our living room, I am already smiling from ear to ear envisioning the endless possibilities ahead of me and anyone willing to “jump” with me.

(me, 20 some odd years ago LOL 👉)

So let’s consider this a “To Be Continued…”

Let's Get Moving!

With all of this talk about getting in the right frame of mind, getting back in the swing of things and putting our plans on paper...it's time to move.

Last week I quickly mentioned at the end of the newsletter my thoughts about, "Is 15 minutes enough time to workout?". I want to reiterate, your body needs to move on a daily basis. With that said, unless you have a very specific goal, like running a marathon or you want to learn how to do a headstand, I DO believe 15 minutes is better than nothing.

I have heard so many times...
"I wanted to get back into working out but I just couldn't find the time"

Or today, I heard ...
"I started my old exercise routine up again but I couldn't commit to the 45-60 minutes required to get it done, so I stopped."

No, No, No...I don't want you to just bag it all together. I want you to realize it's ok to do things differently. It's ok to modify your workout program to work with your current lifestyle. You don't need to look back to go forward. 

You DO need to move and you DO have permission to switch it up to WORK FOR YOU. Who you are now!

Quick Stretch Workout Video

Freestyle JBird Workout

(video demo below)

Set One: Legs & Balance Work

  1. Prayer Squat w/ Alternating Arm Circle

  2. 1st Position Plie Combo

  3. Curtsey with Kick

Do 10-12 reps. of each, remembering to do the curtseys on both sides.

Set Two: Hips, Butt & Abs

  1. Rear Leg Extensions

  2. Forearm Walks

  3. Roll Ups

Do 10-12 reps. of each, starting with Exercise 1, followed by 2. Repeat 1 on the other side and then finish with the Roll-Ups (3) with the variation where you can keep your form clean, continually flow through the transitions & challenges you the most.

Set Three: Core & Upper Body Work

  1. Alternating Body Swivel

  2. Flying Dog Triple Knee Tuck

  3. Forearm Hip Dips

Do 10-12 reps of Exercise 1. 8 total Flying Dog Series; 4 on each side. And finish with 10-12 alternating lead arms, with the option to keep your hips at shoulder height or create a rainbow with your hips peaking upward.

Great 15 minute workout, with the option to repeat 2-3 more rounds for a longer workout.

Always focus on form but most importantly, HAVE FUN!!!

Why I Hate Social Media!

Do you like social media?

 

When I ask this question, I normally get “I’m on it all day.”, “I can’t live without it.” or the compete other extreme of “Not my thing.", “Nope, I want nothin’ to do with it!”.

 

And I…I’m a little bit of both.

I find it helpful to stay in touch via Facebook or Instagram with everyone throughout the week, especially with those like yourself who follow JBird. But like most, I get sucked in and can find myself literally losing time. And you & I both know...time is precious.

 

The other factor is how social media has the power of clouding our thoughts & mind. Muddying it up with ideas or unimportant things which distract us from our personal goals & dreams.

 

Don’t stop reading this, if you're the person who’s NOT addicted to social media.

 

Because I've taken on a new strategy to pull me away from distractions & reboot my own goals and I think the 3 steps below can be helpful on any fitness journey, whether you’re just getting back on track or ready for a change.

 

3 Simple & Effective Step To Get It ALL Done:

  1. Write your goal down with actions to back it up. On a piece of paper write down a headline of the ultimate goal and then a list of 3 actions you can take each week to get you closer to that goal.

  2. Schedule it & set a timer. Build your schedule around your goal and then literally section off micro pockets of time to check off your other priorities.

  3. Be more conscious. On a weekly basis, note where you lost time on things that weren’t important to you and make it a conscious effort to do better the following week.


Easier said than done, right? Especially when social media is sucking up all of your time, kids are calling out your name or your work email inbox is exploding.

I feel you.

But if you begin to use this strategy, you’ll start learning how much time it REALLY takes to get sh*t done and eventually fit everything into your schedule that’s important to you. Helping you to prioritize realistically and...

My answer: "No, not if you're training for a marathon that's happening next week. But YES, if it's the only amount of time you can give to yourself, while trying to balance out other important things in your life."

"15 minutes is a start. Once you get moving, you may find your priorities change or your work/family schedule may ease up, so you can devote more time for yourself".

What's On Your Schedule?

We are off and running 🏃🏻‍♀️

 

Kids started school 🚌

 

Fitness Challenge began last week 🧘

 

The Fall season is underway 🍂

 

Sounds super positive, right?

 

Yes, it is. 😀 But for me it’s been a roller coaster ride already, both physically & emotionally.

 

And I am so thankful for the community of people around me to help me stay focus and smiling. Psst…that includes you.

 

Every week I think “what can I talk about this Sunday, that will connect us & move us both in a positive direction.

 

I have to be completely honest here. It’s not always easy. If you know me well, you know I’m naturally that person who looks at life with the glass half full. But I don’t pretend to be superwomen. I feel overwhelm, sadness and guilt. Oh, the mommy guilts are the worst.

 

But this September I’m feeling pretty good. I got the tears out when Nora got on the bus for the first time. On Wednesday I was reminded of hope, when I stumbled upon my pics of our family at the Freedom Tower a couple of years ago. And I’ve re-energized my desire to reinvent my ever-changing direction on my career path. How about you?


A couple of weeks ago we talked about change and how it's tough but good. And last week we set up a starting point to get you going with the fitness challenge.


So now what? What’s your game plan? What have you got on your agenda, fitness wise, for your Fall season?


Not to get all serious here, but this is a critical piece of the puzzle to get the season beginning on a strong note & set the tone for the months ahead.

I'd love to know the answer, so I can guide you toward that goal on our weekly chats here in the newsletter.

Don’t worry, it’s not a homework assignment or a pass/fail exam. There is no wrong answer, except “sit on the couch all day long & eat bon bons”

Do they even make Bon Bons anymore? I’m more of a Ben & Jerry’s girl. But less talk about ice cream and more talk about moving, exercising, feeling great in your body and having FUN with it.

It’s A Challenge, Game ON!

Hold on a sec….I just need to catch my breath.

Ok, that’s better.

 

I don’t know about you, but it's been a little nutty around here.

 

Which is funny because about a month ago I remember thinking, “I’m prepared this time. I am waaayy more on top of things for the back to school season than ever before. This is going to be easy.”

 

NOT!!!

 

As organized and proactive as you can be, when it comes to change, somethin’ always gets ya. And emotions are high. At least in our house. It’s mostly excitement. But either way the energy in the house is definitely different and more intense.

 

So with that said, I openly & admittedly have not been working out.

 

And this seems to have been a trend the past few years. The trend being...go with the flow, enjoy what the last days of summer bring and don’t get hung up on the schedule because soon enough, you're going to be tied to the calendar.

 

With that said, workouts take a backseat and a 2-week marathon to squeeze in every activity humanly possible, with rest & relaxation sprinkled in more than any other time of the year, begins.

 

It’s all good. The way life should be. Like the ocean ebbs & flows and mountain ranges have valleys, it is completely natural to be on the GO GO GO and then take time to soak up the sun.

 

The challenge comes when you have to get back in the flow of things.

 

Whoa, wait…did I just say challenge?

 

Oh yeah, that’s it, you heard me…it’s a challenge, aha aha aha….it’s a challenge.

 

Okay, so you either just read the last sentence with this look on your face 🤔.    Or you were singing right along with me 🎶🎙️

 

All you need to know, either way, is YES! it can be challenging. But if you have a game plan, nothing can stop you.

 

And to make it super easy, I’ve set up a game plan for you to follow.

 

You Got It! It’s a Fitness Challenge.

 

15 minutes a day for 10 days, to get you back in the swing of things.

 

All you need to do is log-in, go to the challenge workout video of the day, move your body and feel GREAT about it. Best of all, it's FREE!

But sometimes you need to ease into things differently and committing to 15 minutes every other day, would work better for you.

You Deserve It!

That’s a wrap, folks!

 

Another summer in the books and now we’re heading into back-to-school time.

 

You may have expectations of things “getting back to normal” but the reality is, the next couple of weeks are going to be a little rocky.

 

There is always a little adjustment period.

 

And I’m here to tell you “IT”S OKAY”

 

But…and it’s a big but…no no no, not that Butt.

 

But the YOU piece of the puzzle, being just as important as getting everything & everyone else in order.

 

As the calendar starts to fill up, you need to intentionally & unapologetically put TIME IN FOR YOURSELF TO MOVE in big bold letters!

Intentionally & Unapologetically!!!

Schedule walks in the park with a friend, class time/working out with your favorite instructor (ahem…sorry, just clearing my throat LOL) and FUN Fall activities like hiking, biking, horseback riding and apple & pumpkin picking.

 

There is no such thing as the right day or right season to move your body. It’s an essential part of being a human being everyday every season.

 

And yes, you are a human being even if you have kids like I do, crawling all over you at any given moment in the day.

 

I love those little buggers, but man does it feel good to get away from them for a quick workout sesh to clear my mind & connect to my body.

 

It really does.

 

And I want the same thing for you. Whether it’s kids, work or whatever you need a quick break from to refresh yourself.

 

You deserve it. Normally I would put an exclamation point here, but not today. It's a straight out (.) period, end of discussion, matter of fact statement.

YOU DESERVE IT.

4 Ways to Create An Energizing Workout Routine...in just 15 minutes.

This past week I was so inspired by the energy in my Wednesday barre class that an unintentional theme come about.

Before we closed the hour long session together, I felt compelled to talk about the importance of moving boldly & creating positive energy, but to also balance it out by letting go from time to time.

One way we do this in class is we really go for it! When we lift our arms up, we make sure we are reaching through the very tips of our fingers, as if we're going to touch the ceiling. When we squat, we keep our hearts open, shoot our hips back and drop our butts as low as we can with every single rep.

The intensity and energy builds & builds to a point where you're uncertain whether you’ll get through the next rep or count, but I reassure you...

“You Can Do It!”

And you do.

Then...

We rest.

In an hour class, the rest periods are short & sweet because I don’t have much time with you and I know you're there to work. But I am relying on you to find the balance when you leave.

 

Nuture yourself with intervals of down time.

 

Let go.

 

You may find this message strange coming from me. I’ve often had people ask me “where do you get all of this energy?” I usually just smile and say I love what I do, it gets me excited and I’m happy to share it. But I wonder...do you think I'm like that all of the time?

 

When I look back over my nearly 25 years in the biz, all of the above has always been true. And the answer to your question would have been YES!

Early on, I was running full throttle 24/7.

But I soon learned, even in my 20's, it was unsustainable.

Most of my other friends in fitness, who were doing the same, started to get injuries. Beside an old dance injury, I was one of the lucky ones, who seemed to skate by without anything major. Ironically, I think the ankle sprain I had in my teens, may have saved me. My body didn’t want anything like that to happen again, so if I ever thought I was pushing beyond the limit, I pulled back. But not back enough.

I may not have had bodily injuries but I had major boats of insomnia. And I was forced to slow down. Make a change and find a more balanced lifestyle.

 

See, your body has the ability to send you signals when it’s time to rev the engines & also the times it needs to idle for a bit.

 

But it’s up to you, your mind that is, to listen.

 

I’m hoping you never even find it necessary to interpret the messages your body is telling you. Like I did. 

 

But how? Where do you start?

 

You start by being mindful. Then, set a plan in motion. And work together as a community to keep each other in check.


Here are some tips to creating an energizing & balanced workout routine.


4 Ways to Create Positive Energy:

  1. Jump start your day with a quick, invigorating mini workout session to get your heart pumpin' and ignite your energy.

  2. Go for a brisk walk to a destination that inspires you.

  3. Drop the weights & use your body weight as leverage. A reminder “the only thing you really need, to be strong, is yourself”.

  4. Workout with a friend, trainer or instructor who challenges you.

4 Ways to Let Go:

  1. Before you close out your workout session, sit or lie down somewhere you will be undisturbed. Start a timer for 5 minutes, close your eyes, listen to your heart beating & your breath, slow them both down gradually and only open your eyes when the timer goes off.

  2. Go for a stroll, wander, and let the road lead the way.

  3. Sporadically forgo your regularly schedule intense workout & do a 15 minute stretch session instead.

  4. Workout with a friend, trainer or instructor who makes you laugh.


There are days when life feels complicated. But when you look at small, little changes you can make in a day, it becomes much more manageable and way more FUN!

Talk It Out & Get Movin'

I feel like a whole new woman.

If you havn’t heard, I was lucky enough to have my in-laws take the girls on their annual Myrtle Beach vacation, while I stayed home and worked.

I know that sounds crazy. Lucky? Yes, lucky. Lucky because I’ve had so much on my mind, things I’ve wanted to do, but admittedly I’ve been distracted.

It’s not the first time this has happened in life. There have been the times I was distracted by boys in junior high school, the daydreams of traveling while serving customers at the local yogurt shop, living the dream while working on cruise ships but forgetting about home, a whole year of wedding planning back in 2008, and every move I've ever made.

Not exercise moves. I've actually moved homes every 2-3 years of my adult life. Now that's what I call CRAZY!

This time the culprit has been motherhood. My greatest challenge yet. All for a good cause, of course, with two loving, amazing kids by my side to show for it. But a distraction from my inner self.

So much so that sometimes my brain has felt completely scattered, with the inability to finish even the smallest of tasks.

Needless to say, whether you’re in a new relationship, you have a new job/overwhelmed by your current one or your name is now Mommy…

It’s important to still feel connected to yourself.

And although motherhood has given me great joy and has introduced me to a new part of myself, I still ❤️ the career I’ve been in for nearly 25 years and have dreams for it's future.

I’ve learned the hard way that it’s impossible to just turn that piece of YOURSELF off, without it nagging at you in the background. It can sometimes cause stress, disappointment and frustration with others, even though they have NO IDEA what’s going on in your mind and in your heart.

So about six weeks ago I just started to talk it out.

Not in my own brain, but to almost everyone I knew.

And the more I talked about the visions I had & what I wanted to do, their support and just their listening ear made it seem that much more possible...

And it started to become, no longer just a dream, but a reality.

Maybe this is too heavy of a topic for summertime, as you know I think summer should be all about fun. But before we know it, the kids will be back to school, the Fall season will be upon us and I’m realizing the conversations need to start happening now for us to take action in the short days ahead.

So here I am asking...

Is there something you’ve been wanting to do, something nagging at you, something that you think is a devil on your shoulder but is really this bright light that completes you and would make you feel ALIVE?

Pssst...think traditional spaces, like dance studios & such but don't be afraid to think out of the box too. A clothing store, hair salon, food establishment, a farm, country club, do you have a connection at the local library, parks department or a museum or even in your own backyard, they are all possibilities and you know I'm always looking for a FUN way to do things 😜

Workout Ideas, Feeling Sleepy & Love

I was off on a mini vacation this past week, visiting with my dad and dropping the girls off at my in-laws place in Myrtle Beach. So even though I’m kid free for the next 6 days, I’ve been packing, flying, getting the girls settled at Mom-Mom & Pop-Pops and gettin’ my booty back on the plane home just a few hours ago.

 

So I will be back next week with my usual shtick, but until then I thought I’d remind you of some newsletters past, just in case you missed anything along the way.

My Secret To Having More Time to Enjoy Life

We’ve been chatting about...

Workout Music, Summer Fitness FUN, & Swimwear and also Healthy & FUN Summer Eats the past few weeks. (If you missed any of the above, click the pink to catch up) So wrapping it up one more time with...

“I’ve been spending my summer days...”



Drinking Water, Water, and More Water. I hate to be boring but I can’t get enough of this stuff. Especially since we just had an excessive heat warning here in PA the past few days. Whether it’s good old filtered tap or sparking, it’s taking over my beverage consumption. So I'm sending out a PSA to STAY HYDRATED! It will keep you fueled for whatever adventures are to come in your day and allow you to have the energy you need to crank up the party level this season.

P.S. A little shout out to Jenn Z. for getting me this water bottle a few years ago, soon after JBird started. I nearly cried when she gave it to me. So stinkin' thoughtful!

It was a reminder for me to take it all in with every sip because JBird Fitness was just about to take flight.

Reading…truth? Not much. I so badly want to be one of those moms at the pool or beach, book in hand, being whisked away into another world. But every year I say I’m going to buy a summer read and never do.

So a couple of days ago, when I was visiting the library with the girls, I snuck off to the big kids section (aka the adult section, but writing that seemed obscene LOL) and I took out “The Girl On The Train”. I know I’m way behind on this one but I’ve had a handful of moms say it’s a good read and figured I’d give it a try. I’m only a few pages in but I’m already hooked and wondering "Is this the summer I go book wild?"

If so, I'll want to keep the momentum going with another waiting in the wings. This is where you come in.

Working Out Less. WHAT?!? Yep. I'm not discouraging you from exercising but moreover encouraging you to PLAY MORE. When I say “working out less” I mean gym workouts have taken a backseat to mini workout sessions at home so I have more time to bike, hike & explore the outdoors. This is the time of the year I’ve been preparing for all winter. And now I’m taking advantage of all my hard work by enjoying movement in nature with family & friends.
