I have often said “the moment I put the mic on my head and turn the music on” a rush of energy comes over me.

Seriously!

I could be having the worst day EVER and it all changes when I walk in the studio classroom.

So I thought 🤔 (?)

In last week’s newsletter, I was in overwhelm mode with the enormity of change we have all been experiencing. And the emotional gratitude I have for you came pouring out.

The microphone & music do have a super-hero like power, making me feel amped up & ready to go. But...

At the end of the day, I know it’s the human connection, which lights that fire from within.

Why? Because…

We all have good days & bad days.
We all have weaknesses & strengths.
We all feel the challenges before us.


And it’s comforting knowing I’m not alone. You’re feeling the same exact things as I am.

As a JBird peep, you’re EXTRA special because:

You are most likely moved by music. 🎼 
You’re willing to try new things and move in all kinds of directions. 💃 
You’ve gotta have a sense of humor 😆
And you’re not afraid to have FUN 🎉 , in fact, you're looking for it.

Looking to be uplifted. Looking to make it a better day. Looking to embrace any & all positive vibes thrown your way and gobbling them up like it’s Easter dinner.

The overwhelm last week was a little bit of uncertainty, I won’t lie. But it was quickly wrestled to the ground by how we are all rising to the occasion of the changes needed before us.

Just like I am always preaching “Our body & mind are connected. And it’s important to stay in tune with both.” Your connection to loved ones, friends, and your community is revealing to be as equalling important.

For me, needing to show up for our LIVE classes and on our JBird Fitness Facebook Community page has been a blessing. Because I get to “see” you. Connect to you.

Everyday, in one felt swoop, I get to check off Body, Mind, & Soul. Soul, in part, being the yearning to feel connected to other like-minded human being.

So with that said, take the time this upcoming week to nurture all 3.

Body. Mind. Soul.

Whether it be the first thing you do when you wake up, an intentional break you take in the middle of your day or something you schedule to complete your evening. Do it!

We are all going through the changes happening in our 🌎 You are not alone. Take care of yourself, keep sharing experiences virtually with others and we will all come out of this stronger!

Do what you CAN, Take the Opportunities

So I was taking a shower the other night and it was one of those...
“I DO NOT want to get out, I just want to stay in here forever” kinda showers. 

The girls were occupied, Ryan wasn’t home from work yet and with the sound of the water drowning out what was happening outside the bathroom door, I, for a moment, had the strangest feeling rush over me.

I actually thought everything that’s going on in our world right now was a dream. Like the shower was this awakening. I shook my head and smiled in disbelief, like how could I have come up with some crazy pandemic paralyzing the world as we know it.

And just as quickly as the thought of “this isn’t really happening” came, the truth that it very much is… slapped me back into reality.

See, I’ve been doin’ my thing. You know, that going with the flow thing that I do. It’s been a part of my DNA ever since I can remember.

Going with the flow has always gifted me with fun adventures in my younger years & helped me adapt to new places with every move I’ve made. But as I’ve gotten older, since I’ve become a mother, I’ve craved something…just something to be consistant. Steady. Reliable.

I guess my creative whimsy self, coupled with the unpredictability of motherhood, needed some roots to stay grounded, but enough freedom to still explore & still have FUN.

So I created JBird.

And YOU have not disappointed me.

Yes, JBird Fitness is a business that provides workout videos and live exercise experiences. And if you didn’t know, JBird is my nickname. A endearing name my brother-in-law, Kevin, & dear family friend, Greg, have called me for many years before this company ever existed. But for me…

JBird Fitness has always been about YOU.

YOU inspire me.

YOU surprise me.

YOU challenge me.

YOU make me laugh.

YOU make me proud.

YOU make me better.

YOU make me stronger.



And I need to thank you.

In a time where everything feels so uncertain, YOU are my roots. You ground me and guide me to a happier place.

Knowing we CAN connect. Knowing we CAN come together a few hours a week to play. Knowing I CAN reach out to you every Sunday night through this email.

It all inspires me to get up, get moving & make TODAY happen.

If you choose to only listen to the news broadcasts or intense social media posts, you may start to focus on the limitations of what is happening right now. And I don’t want that for you.

You have inspired me to look at the opportunities. Look at the things we CAN do, to stay healthy, happy & stronger. And best of all…do it TOGETHER!

Stress-Free & Going LIVE to Energize

Life's message "it's out of our hands" has been loud & clear lately. But it doesn't mean there aren't things you can do to feel good each & every day.
 

Am I being too optimistic? I don't think so.

I realize the massive juggling act we are all undertaking right now. Whether it's literally home-schooling your kids & doing work conference calls simultaneously or it's the roller coaster ride of emotions we are all experiencing that has your head spinning. I assure you, you are not alone.

I don't have a magic potion or any quick fixes to wipe everything away but...

I do have 3 things you can realistically do which will help jump start/reset your day, clear your mind and alleviate stress.

Bonus, they will also help you save time in your fitness program.

Now how's that for being efficient & effective in a time of need 😜
 

1. MORNING MOVES - Do a quick yoga stretch like the one in the video clip below, for about 2-3 minutes right when you wake up. It will get your body moving and start your day off on a positive note.
     Why is it a time-saver? It will get you in tune with your body from the moment you roll out of bed, making you more efficient in every move after.

The 2 minute video clip (below) is from our JBirdFitness.com Barre Express workout. If you're interested in becoming an On-Demand member, you can find information in the "What's Happening" section at the bottom of this email.

2. REV IT UP! - When you are at the tail end of your workout remember this newsletter and give it everything you have. Great form is still paramount but really GO FOR IT!. Start by just doing this the last 30 seconds of your routine and then more time as you progress. (ex: your workout is 15 minutes long, at 14:30 Go For It!, next week at 14:00 Don't Hold Back)
     Why is it a time-saver? It will teach your body how to intensify your workout gradually and safely, eventually enabling you to either shorten your workouts or add more in without actually adding on time.

3. INHALE & EXHALE - At any moment in the day, sit, close your eyes & take 3 deep breaths. Do this especially during a time where you are getting frustrated, no one is listening to you or things have gotten thrown off course.
     How is it a time-saver? Your heart health and sanity are just as important as burning fat & building muscle and they will effect how you approach your workouts. Plus, it will give you time back on your life, as heart disease and stress are a killer.
 

Since we all have a lot on our plates, I'll make you a deal. How about picking one of the above and trying it this week. Then as each week passes, you can experiment with another.

Completely manageable and moving you in a positive direction, for sure!

Working Out At-Home

Just give me a sec before we start chatting....

(off on my own, lifting the glass window pane up, leaning close to the screen, then yelling...THIS IS INSANNNNNNE!!!)

Oh good, you're still here. My polite self would say "sorry, needed a moment" But you know what...I'm not sorry. And you don't need to be either if you're feeling completely turned upside down, inside out.

What's happening in the world & in everyone's backyard right now is CRAZY!

So let it out!

Go ahead...I'll wait.

The least I could do, after you listened to my belly yell out my window.

.
.

You good? Feels better, right? I know. But we can't stay here. It's okay to revisit every now & then. But if we stay "here" we'll get gobbled up.

So, what can we do to make this better?

Now that there are strong whispers that this is going to be longer than two weeks...let's take a deep breath, exhale and figure out what we CAN do to feel happier.

Shift our mindset from thinking about the things we are missing out on and find creative ways to be connected to each other & maybe even find out new things about ourselves.

I'll share one I learned about myself this past week.

4 years ago I started JBird Fitness. The goal was to work virtually so I could be home with the kids more. But in the beginning I found myself more stressed than happy.

I loved creating the workouts and staying connected to past students. But being in front of a video camera was uncomfortable (which only took time, to get over). Yet solely working online, having to put myself "out there" on social media was hard.

Add on not being able to look my students directly in the eye, give them a form correction or even a hug was the trigger for me to get back in the classroom.

Since then I've said, the virtual business ain't for me. And still isn't completely.

But...

(hold your ears if you need to because I'm going to be yelling again)

I had so much FUN doing our LIVE workouts this past week!!!

Hello...that's teaching in the virtual world, Janine.

I know, but something triggered. Something in me got over putting "myself" out there and was just so happy we could all be "together".

So, in the end I learned that I am & can be a virtual business owner but I just needed to tap back into my in-person teaching self these past 2 years, to figure out how I AM going to do it. 

Being inspired but others, but following no one else's playbook but my own.

And now I'm going to do the same thing with home-schooling my kids and whatever else comes our way.

Is the situation we are all in normal? No. But let's continue sharing and then searching inside of ourselves for what's going to keep happiness a part of our every day.

With time, we may even discover a whole new side of ourselves, who was stronger & more inventive than we ever thought possible.

I opened the studio doors on Thursday...everyone was talking about it.

I turn on the tv…broadcast banners flashing updates.

I scroll through my social media…more about this pandemic.

And you know what? It’s okay. It’s all good.

Everyone needs to know what is happen, everyone needs to stay informed, everyone needs to stay connected, talk it out and rely on our community to get through these days ahead.

So what are we going to do here at JBird Fitness...

Keep Moving!
Keep moving to continue strengthen our bodies.
Keep moving to take time away from the intensity surrounding us.
Keep moving to stay connected to one another.

Keep moving to do our part in emitting positive vibes out into the 🌎 

It may seems frivolous to “just exercise” right now. But when we workout together, we are doing so much more.

We are strengthening our community.
We are take charge of our own health.
We are showing young people how important it is to take care of yourself.
We are cultivating positivity & sharing it with those around us.

Wake Up, Focus, Get Energized & Let Go...

Balanced Body is the featured workout video collection for the month of March but not because I think there is really such a thing as balance.

Life is more like a juggling act and we can either be really clumsy at it or find our grace.

Now I will fully and openly admit I am feeling like a huge klutz lately. I’ve been juggling too many balls at once (Gosh, that sounds wildly inappropriate) and I’m working on re-prioritizing so I can feel sane again.

First step, getting back into my yoga practice.

Why?

It helps clear my mind.

Only problem is...with my JBird class schedule, working at Athleta & being a mom, sometimes finding the time to fit in a full hour is challenging. So I've been breaking it up into 15-20 minute routines before I go to bed.

I would do it in the morning if I was looking to jump start my day off energized & raring to go. But since my biggest struggle is quieting my thoughts when my head hits the pillow, nighttime is best.

Now I've only been playing with this for the past week, but I am happy to report it is doing the body good...and my mind as well.

And I already feel like I am on the road to a more balanced well-being.

So you may be thinking "so why don't you teach yoga?"

I actually do.

It's not a tradition approach, but yoga is fused into all of my workouts because I love the ridiculous amount of benefits the poses & the fluid motion of a vinyasa flow practice bring.

But just like my students come to class or log on to JBirdFitness.com for "me" time, this fitness mama needs her time too.

WE ALL DO.

Me time to not being responsible for anyone or anything else but yourself.

YOU & ONLY YOU.

With that said, I'm sharing a simple, quick flow you can do anytime during your day, if you are looking to :

Looking for a Boost in Energy?

I had FUN this past week looking back at when dance fitness began to creep back, excitedly into my life. I had no idea JBird classes were on the horizon but I was willing to play with moving in a different way to inspire the change I knew I was looking for. This is one of the first You Tube videos I posted 2 years ago. A lot has changed since then, but moving this way still makes me feel AMAZING & in a dreamy state of mind.

The Moves:

  • Butterfly - Feet wide, arms expand open & close 3x, followed by hands to heads and down

  • Swivel Lunge Low 3x with palm press across low, middle and high followed by 2 Jacks

  • Alternating Punches to the Sky 4x with Step Touches followed by 2 Arm Circles & Hip Pops


Having Trouble Focusing?

Hone in on your center by doing Tree Pose. By clearing your thoughts to focus on balancing, you will disregard anything that is not important and re-center your priorities.

Tree Pose

Tree Pose How-to:

  • Step 1 Stand tall, shoulders back & down and the crown of your head reaching to the sky.

  • Step 2 Activate your right standing leg. Keep your hip bones level and pointed forward. Turn your left knee out and draw your left foot to the side of your shin or to your inner thigh, above your knee. Pressing your foot and thigh together, press your left knee back, keeping your hips stable.

  • Step 3 Bring your palms to your heart in prayer. Lengthen your tailbone down and lift up through your torso. Stretch down through your leg. 

  • Step 4 After three to five breaths, release your arms and your left leg, bringing your foot back to the floor. Repeat all on the other side.

My Favorite Thing About Working Out...

"Exercise is not the #1 way to lose weight. It's eating right."

Holy crap! Really?...Honestly, yes!

So now you may be thinking, "Then, Janine, why do I need to workout?"

Before you go off the deep end, de-prioritze movement and head straight for the diet jugular, you need to know the truth. Diets are not the answer either. But more over, eating healthy is. And...

Finding a balance between sleeping well, fueling your body & having a a consistent movement practice is the BEST WAY TO STAY STRONG & FIT!

But I'm loving the idea of scraping the thought that exercise is just for weight loss. Now it opens up the door for a boat load of other amazing reasons why working out is so important to you.

My favorite things about working out...

  • It's a Total Mind Body Wake Up Call: I feel more connected to my body, when I'm exercising & even when I'm not.

  • Checks Off All 3 Boxes: It helps me sleep better & reminds me to eat healthy.

  • Gives Me An Emotional Boost, Big Time!: It makes me HAPPY & feel more confident.


And these are just a few. Throw in teaching classes being beyond fulfilling because I thoroughly enjoy watching members leave class with a huge smile on their face. And during class...well that's a whole other level of awesome. The energy is palpable. And we're in it...we're in it together!!

Seriously, nothin' better 😊

I'm imagining you said Happy Valentine’s Day to lots of people in your life, whether it was a spouse or a partner, your kids or your friends, maybe even your coworkers...

But don’t forget to say it to yourself before the end of the day, today.

With that said, you probably had goals for the new year you may or may not have started. And usually right about now, you start thinking "I haven't done enough".

I am here to tell you, you are doing exactly what you’re supposed to be doing. Unless you’re sitting on the couch 😂  And even if you are, let the judgment go. Because the only thing that it’s going to do...is hold you back.

To move forward, you’ve got to have a positive attitude and you’ve got to start loving yourself.

Gosh that sounds cheesy. But you know what? Sometimes cheesy is the truth.

And you know what else?

Here at JBird you have a tribe of women cheering you on!

You want to feel good in your body?

Move.

Are you tired before the day has even begun?

Move.

You think "I don't have time, I have XYZ to take care of"?

Move.

When YOU move, YOU MOVE THE WORLD! 🌎 

You won't feel good, you'll feel GREAT. You'll have energy. You'll look forward to working out. And you will have put yourself properly on the priority list, which will in turn change the world around you for the positive.

Go on...Love Yourself. Love Your FINE self. I dare you💋

Celebrate The LOVE & Each Other!

There has been a little controversy over the JLo & Shakira Halftime show.

Whether you're on the side of "Can we have a more PG rated halftime?" or "You Go Girl!", I gotta say I loved it. You know I can't pass up a good hip shake.

Seriously, hips don't lie 😉 

As a mom of 2 young girls, I'll admit it was a little much at times. But for me, that was all overshadowed by the way both performers owned that stage. And every dancer, every singer in the show had a huge smile on their face.

There was pure joy out on that field.

So Valentine's Day week couldn't be happening at a better time. Let's push aside any negative thinking and embrace everyone for who they are.

There are always going to be differences of opinions, but that doesn't mean we can't look to those differences for inspiration to up our own personal game.

What I took from the Superbowl Halftime Show...

Walk Tall, Strong & Confident.
Own Your Space.
Be Proud Of Who You Are.
And Smile...Smile & CELEBRATE TODAY!


Now it's your turn. It doesn't have to be Shakira or JLo, but pick someone who inspires you, someone you look up to and instead of just looking up to them, start to celebrate those same qualities you also possess inside.

Don't think you're anything like your idol? You're wrong. Your simple atttraction to them means you are like-minded. Now you just need to start acting like it. Own it! 2020 Is Your Year To Shine!

Let's Wake Up Every Muscle In Your Body

I sent you three mini workouts last week, did you get them? More importantly, did you do them? I almost said “did you try them?” but I’m over that word, “try”.

It’s time to shake off those winter blues and GET MOVING!

After last Sunday’s tragic news of the great loss of 9 lives, my heart was feeling heavy too. And I even thought, “How can I send out this mini workout newsletter in the wake of such sadness?”

But here’s the truth.

I wrote that newsletter days before because I do my best to reserve Sundays for as much family time as humanly possible. And like most, I am always searching for the best way to balance, more like juggle, it all.

It’s not easy. But prioritizing what's important, can help put together a schedule that reflect who you are & what you want to feel.

I used to only use…family, work & me as the top 3 factors to divvy up, but I’ve recently added :

  • Accomplished

  • Free

  • Happy

When I look at my calendar for the days ahead, I do everything in my power to keep these things in mind. And make sure there is enough of all of the above in the books, to fuel me and keep me looking forward to waking up each day.

There is no perfect formula and yes, there are some days where responsibilities or caring for others takes the front seat. But staying committed...


CREATING AN EBB & FLOW of needs & wants
...with constant reflection on your prioritizes, will bring a lightness to the daily grind & sprinkle bits of happiness throughout your minutes, hours & days.

I’ve said it before and I’m sayin’ it again…Movement is ESSENTIAL! for your body.

But it can also be FUN! and check off many boxes on your list.

If you haven’t noticed, my ‘life” philosophy also melts into my teaching style & workout choreography.

Whether you are working out with me on JBirdFitness.com , focusing on toning & strengthening your muscles in Transform or shakin’ your booty in Cardio Moves class, you will feel waves of intensity followed by moments of letting go.

So this week, when you are moving your body and exercising, practice starting off simply by “getting into your body”. Just feeling how your body is doing in that given day.

Then gradually amp it up. From inside out, stir up your energy and push yourself to a place you didn’t think you could go but have always wanted. Get to know yourself in this intense but exciting new place for as long as you can.

And when you’re done…chill. Bring it back down, slowly. Savor it, enjoy it. Smile about it.

Like life, no workout is perfect, but the brilliant thing about exercising is you are in control of every move. 

Make it work for YOU!

Being the time of year, when resolutions are on your mind, we're expected to flip that switch & turn life upside down to make that promise happen. But...

Where do you begin, how do you know it’s the right choice & what happens if it doesn’t work?

My Challenge To You...
In the next 7 days mix it up and put a fresh new spin on your fitness program, by throwing these next 3 mini workouts into the ring.

Guaranteed, they wake up your body & get you moving in the right direction.

First up, a quick Cardio Moves WorkoutThe ULTIMATE way to PLAY!

1. "Wake Up"
 -  Start with feet wide, reach to the sky, then melt downward to the floor. Roll back up to start and finish with 4 hip circles on the right. Repeat on the left & keep alternating for 60 seconds.

2. "Dig Deep" - Angle your body to face the corner of the room. Forward knee bent, back heel up. Bring your back knee toward your chest 4 times, naturally moving your arms. Then switch to the other side. Keep repeating 4 on one side, 4 on the other with power & energy for 60 seconds.

3. "Get Low" - Feet wide, toes turned slightly outward. Squat to sit low, then shift your body to the right & lengthen the legs to go high. Get down & center again to then shift to the left. Alternate from side to side, making sure to create big movements from high to low for 60 seconds.

4. "Twist & Shout" - Begin with your feet together, toes pointing on a diagonal. Lightly hop/jump the feet to the opposed diagonal. Keep hopping side to side and then add the arms & upper body to twist in the opposite direction (low, middle, high) and continue for a total of 60 seconds.

Do all 4 moves, then repeat 2 more rounds to have a complete 15 minute Cardio Moves workout.

Your Goals: Move Your Whole Body, Get Your Heart Pumping' & Have FUN!!!

They Did It! You Can Too...

If you’ve ever taken class with me, you know I am all business when it comes to exercise form, making you FEEL IT everywhere in every way. But…

When you start back up with your fitness routine, this can mean the intensity is at a whole new level. My concern...

We’re only 3 weeks into 2020 & you may be getting in your own way.

My students came into class on Thursday morning, moaning and groaning because they were still feeling the past couple of workouts in their bodies. But I will tell you...the best thing they did was come back to class.

Now safety is always first. So if you think you may injury yourself, of course you want to make an adjustment in your plan. But...

If it’s your thoughts being hijacked by negative mojo like  “That was too tough for me" or "There’s no way I’m going back, I’m not strong enough", or worse "I’m so out of shape, I’ll never keep up.", then...

I want you to get out of your head & get into your body.

Embrace the soreness. It’s a sign you woke up your muscles. Be proud to walk a little funny up the stairs. And laugh when you go to stand up, from sitting on the toilet, and those legs are burning.

This too shall pass...but if you stop now, you’ll have to start all over again in the near future. Mostly because I’m not going to let you sit on your butt all winter.

More importantly, because

Your body is meant to move.

It craves it.

It can’t live without it.

So...stay the course.

This is a positive change, which will lessen in intensity and eventually spark a playful energy & a boost in your confidence. But it's super important to ride this wave of uncomfortability to get to this happier place. And...

You deserve all the happiness in the world.

It Only Takes A Moment

This past week was rough…in the BEST way possible!

As excited as I was about starting back up with classes, I’m not immune to the challenges that came from “getting back into the swing of things”. 

But I quickly realized I was not alone.

On Monday we started up with the new class schedule and not only did I come across bumps in the road, myself, but every student walking through the studio door had a tale to tell.

“I couldn’t get my kids out the door fast enough”

“I’m always running late, and today I was REALLY running late”

“I forgot my yoga mat.”

“I haven’t worked out in forever, I’m not sure I’m going to get through this whole class.”


But…

We all showed up.

We shook off whatever was going on.

And we got the job done.

Oh, and did I mention we had FUN! doing it.

JBird Fitness Classes

Yeah, that’s right.

After all the hemming & hawwing (said with no judgment at all, as I was feeling exactly the same way)…we turned things around and all left that classroom smiling. Feeling good about ourselves. And knowing we just took the first step to “getting back to normal”.

And damn, did it feel good!

Now if you’re one of those people who haven’t gotten your butt movin’ yet. Don’t freak out. And certainly don’t start being all judgement on yourself. One, that won’t help matters and two, as you can see, it only took one moment to shift gears.

One moment to decide exactly how, when & where you are going to get the ball rolling again.

And when that moment comes, you will find yourself moving happily in the direction you want.

So…(even for my brave souls, who went through the trenches first with me this week) let’s make a game plan.

Write Down:

  1. What are you going to do for exercise this week?

  2. When? Days/times?

  3. Where are you going to workout?

Be SPECIFIC! The more detailed you are, the better. You'll already commit your mind to it and then when the day comes, you will more likely do it.

So, WRITE IT DOWN!

I’m not joking.

I heard a cool stat this past week, from a goal-setting study by a physcology professor from the Dominican University of California.

Which said:

"Human beings are 42% more likely to achieve our goals if we simply write them down."

42%!!!

For something that doesn't take a lot of time, that's HUGE!

So we are going to be on the winning side of this statistic right now.

Write done your What? When? & Where? fitness goals for this week and let’s get this party started!

At-Home Barre Legs Workout Video

More Than A Workout...Don't Settle!

I came up with the JBird Fitness tagline “Fly On A Fitness High” because movement and exercise have always fueled me with an inexplicable rush of goodness, which I’ve shared with you before and have absolutely no intentions of ever stopping.

But I too am always looking for the thing that is going to drive me & get me excited to wake up in the morning.

And although fitness has always played a huge part in the “it’ factor for me. The movement I have focused on has shifted and changed throughout the years.

I’ve mentioned, when I started teaching, Step was the rage & I was an addict. But I don’t think I have ever told you that before I got into group fitness, power walking was my jam.

No joke!

I’m pretty sure I was the youngest power walker in the neighborhood, while I’d see my mom & her friends suited up, sweatbands & all. 

But that didn’t stop me.

Of course I couldn’t do it without music, so I would pop my cassette tape into my Walkman and venture off in my spankin' white Reeboks.

When I first started I could only do a mile or 2. But before I knew it I was walking all the way to the south end of town & back. Which I just google mapped and proud to say, it was 8 miles round trip LOL

I remember how good it felt after each walk and how I couldn’t wait to see how much further I could go the next time.

I didn’t have a fitness tracker back then, but I didn’t need one. Yes, I took note of my pace, route & time, but I would never had gone back out there if it didn’t make me happy.

So…

What Are You Going To Change About Your Fitness Program This Year?

To make sure you stick to the plan…My best advise is to choose something you enjoy.

It’s got to be more than a workout!

It’s a phrase I have repeated time & time again to members and students, whenever I am asked “What kind of workout should I be doing?”

More Than A Workout is #1 on the priority list.

It’s when you put aside all of the calorie counting, self-judgement, fitness tracking and whatever other external factors may sway your experience and you just discover the pure joy in moving your body.

And when you find movement that makes you happy, exercising becomes waaaayy more than something on your to-do list. It transitions very quickly to a “I’ve got to do it”,  “I don’t want to miss it”,  “I WILL NOT miss it…because I really have fun working out!”

So, my wish for you in 2020 is to discover workouts you look forward to and want to go back to the very next day. Exercise that gets you moving in a positive direction. And movement you just can’t live without.

For most, this is the time of year to play. Play with different ways to move. Or like me, go back to movement which has always been FUN! and put a new twist on it.

Whatever IT is…Enjoy The Body You Live In!

How R U Going To Make 2020 Your Year?

Happy New Year! 🎉🥳🎉 

Wait…What?

The ball hasn’t dropped yet?

I’m so delirious from the holidays & the kids being off of school, that I thought I missed New Year’s and now you're telling me it hasn’t even happened yet?

That’s because the real count down in my head is when I get back in the classroom teaching!

I am not…I repeat, I am NOT wishing this time away. I am actually enjoying it. But I have to admit, I’m really pumped about 2020. 🤩

I’m not a resolution person because I don’t have the patience to wait for something I want or something to magically happen for me.

I do my best to “seize the day”, whenever possible. 

But my next venture involves other people. Lots of other people. So I’ve got to be patient, knowing the timing isn’t until next week.

So I’m sittin’ over here (squirming in my seat, like my anxious & excited 5 year old), telling my yogi-self to kick in, breathe and simply enjoy the moment.

But MAN! (Or should I say WOMAN!) It Aint’ Easy!!!

This week I am taking a mini-vaca to spend time with these 3 amazing humans and also with extended family & friends, expecting to fill our bellies and even more importantly, making memories.

Athleta Tights in Powervita:
I have learned a lot by working at the Athleta store in North Wales. A lot about fabric, wicking, compression and athleisure, in general. The great thing about Athleta is there is something for EVERY BODY in their line of clothes.

But for me...I am fully obsessed with any tights or capris they make in their Powervita fabric.

It's beyond soft, moves with your body and there is no tugging, bulging, or squeezing into, with these bottoms. And the bonus, they aren't just for working out.

I wear them ALL DAY LONG!

Oh, and did I mention the leopard print?...Obsessed, I tell you, OBSESSED!

Speaking of headphones...I do like to make believe I'm a DJ in my jammin' white big a** headphones above, when I'm on my laptop top. But to workout...I need something that won't get in my way.

I bought Ryan a pair of Bose wireless buds a few years ago and he really loves them. But since I mostly exercise while I am teaching class or at-home with videos, I didn't want to be too spendy on workout headphones. So when Ryan found these, I was super happy.

Eye Pillow

Eye Pillow:
This may not seem like a fitness gift, but at the end of the day when all the hard work is done, everyone deserves a good night's rest.

And sleep has a huge impact on your health.

The first time I ever used one of these in a yoga class I had to have one for home. And I've been using one ever since.

I have experimented with scented, unscented, silk, plush, ones you can cool, others you can heat. My fav...eye pillows with a lavender scent. The scent is aromatherapy to help relieve tension & stress. When cooled it helps with migraines, headaches & puffy eyes. When warmed, it's sooo soothing, I love it!

To Health, Happiness & the Holidays

Temperatures are dropping & snow has already covered our streets and melted here in the Northeast. CRAZY! So I'm singin' "Let It Snow", putting my hands up & surrendering with a smile.

It's such a happy song but the irony is the moment someone starts warning us of weather change, everyone seems to get in a tizzy. 

So what can we do about it...Let It Go, Let It Go, Let It Go!

There are some things in life out of your control. And 'tis the season for all kinds of crazy. How you handle the crazy is what will determine your health & well-being throughout the remainder of the month. So I encourage you to breathe and let it go, my friend.

Recognize life has twist & turns, manage the ones you can modify to your advantage and chill out about the ones you can't.

This reminds me of driving with my husband. Ryan gets so pissy behind the wheel...Seriously!

In his mind, no one knows how to drive except for him. And I always say, "Why do you get yourself all worked up over someone you can't change?" 

So...I started listening to my own advice.

After 12 years of being together, I have stopped telling him to stop getting all worked up over other drivers on the road.

Now how's that for irony?!? And I'll tell you, it wasn't easy. But now I sit in the passenger seat and simply enjoy the ride.

Morale of the story: Enjoy the ride of the holiday season because before we know it, it will all be over.

Tis The Season To Be HAPPY! 😃

Holiday Workout Check List

Yes, last week I went on a rampage telling you it is a MUST to take time to thank yourself & your body during this holiday season and I meant it wholeheartedly.

I also know we all feel like there are not enough hours in the day to get everything done. But hopefully in the last few days you have had a moment or even better, many moments to say hi to those you haven’t seen in a while or hug a smiling face walking through the door or said thank you for being in my life & sharing this meal with me.

Although we, you & I, haven’t been able to share moments like that in the past few days, I want you to know I appreciate you.

As I write from week to week. it makes me happy knowing you're on the other side.

I have this unshakeable desire to get you excited about moving your body and this newsletter helps us stay connected. 

Since my earliest years of teaching, your smiles, your words, your wanting to come back for more….it gives me purpose. It inspires me to be a better teacher. 

And the more we come together, whether it be in class, on JBirdFitness.com or during this weekly newsletter chat, the stronger we both become.

Your Holiday Season Workout Check List:

  1. Write it down. Be realistic but state your goal firmly to make movement a commitment for the holiday season.

  2. Post it up on your refrigerator or put it into your daily calendar app as a reminder.

  3. In the least, commit to an average of 15-20 minutes a day. You can divvy it up any way you'd like. Once a day, 3 days with a longer workout time or any other combination works. But DO IT!

There are workout options down below, so keep your smile bright by moving & closing out 2019 with your best foot forward.
